How do I find SMTP server from a DOMAIN name?

Usually many people believe that the SMTP server must be named SMTP.YourSiteName.com, but this is not always true. An SMTP server can be named anything!

Here there is some easy exercise to find your SMTP server.

  1. You can find the SMTP server by contacting your Web Service Provider and asking them for SMTP server information for the Web Server.

  2. In DOS mode (using the DOS Prompt icon in Windows) or Start -> Run -> CMD (Now press ENTER), then you can type:

ping smtp.YourSiteName.com
and/or
ping mail.YourSiteName.com

Check if you get a response (ping reply) from one of the commands.

  1. In DOS mode (on Windows 2003/2008 Server) use nslookup (for advanced users) and set the parameter "q=mx" to query the MX record for your domain name:

>nslookup
>set q=mx
>YourSiteName.com
